It is the most common DIY air conditioning hack on the internet. But before you start emptying your freezer every night, you need to know what this trick is actually doing to the air in your bedroom.

The short answer: It works for about 15 minutes, and then it makes your room feel worse.

The Science of the "Ice Fan"

The theory behind the ice bowl trick is based on basic evaporative cooling. As the fan blows warm room air over the surface of the ice, the ice absorbs the heat energy to melt. The air that bounces off the ice and hits your skin is physically cooler than the rest of the room.

If you are sitting exactly two feet in front of the fan, you will feel a temporary, refreshing icy breeze.

The Fatal Flaw: Humidity

Here is why this trick ultimately fails to cool your bedroom down: humidity.

A standard desk fan just moves air around. When you introduce a large bowl of melting ice to that airflow, you are actively pumping water vapor into your enclosed bedroom.

UK heatwaves are notoriously humid. When you increase the humidity in an already hot room, you create a swamp-like environment. The human body cools itself by sweating; as sweat evaporates off your skin, it pulls heat away. If the air in your room is saturated with moisture from your melting bowl of ice, your sweat cannot evaporate.

You stop cooling down, your skin feels sticky, and the room feels even more oppressive than before.

The Verdict

The ice bowl trick is a temporary band-aid. By the time you fall asleep, the ice will have melted into lukewarm water, and you will wake up sweating in a highly humid room.

If you want to permanently drop the temperature of your bedroom, you cannot rely on freezing Tupperware containers. You need equipment designed to physically extract heat or circulate air over a massive, room-wide area without adding moisture.
