How to Cool a Mechanic's Garage or MOT Station During a Heatwave

Working on hot car engines in a sweltering metal shed is brutal. Learn how to extract exhaust heat and keep your mechanics safe and productive when the bay doors are wide open.

Running an automotive repair garage or MOT testing station during a summer heatwave is notoriously difficult.

Mechanics are already engaged in heavy, physical labour. Add the fact that they are working inside an uninsulated metal building, leaning over car engines that have just been running at 90°C, and wearing heavy-duty protective workwear. It is a recipe for severe heat exhaustion.

Because garage roller doors have to stay open all day to allow vehicles in and out, traditional air conditioning is completely useless. Here is how to mechanically cool your workshop and keep your mechanics turning wrenches safely.

The Exhaust and Engine Heat Trap

The primary issue in a mechanic's garage isn't just the sun hitting the roof; it is the massive amount of localized heat brought into the building by the cars themselves.

Every time a vehicle rolls onto the ramp, it brings a block of cast iron or aluminium radiating intense heat. When a mechanic is working underneath a car on a lift, that heat gets trapped between the vehicle's chassis and the floor, creating a suffocating microclimate where the air doesn't move.

1. High-Velocity Airflow Under the Ramps

To break up the stagnant heat trapped around the vehicle lifts, you need powerful, directional airflow.

Deploy heavy-duty industrial drum fans and angle them toward the bases of the ramps. The goal is to push a high-speed column of air underneath the vehicles. This sweeps away the trapped engine heat and provides a massive wind-chill effect for mechanics working underneath cars or leaning into wheel wells. Because drum fans are on wheels, they can easily be rolled out of the way when a car needs to be moved.

2. Evaporative Cooling for the Open Bays

Because auto repair shops naturally have massive, permanently open roller doors, they are the absolute perfect environment for Industrial Evaporative Coolers (swamp coolers).

Position a large evaporative cooler near the open bay doors, facing inward. It will pull in the hot outside air, pass it through water-soaked pads, and blast chilled air (up to 10°C cooler) across the workshop floor. Unlike traditional AC, evaporative coolers thrive in open-air environments and cost pennies per hour to run.

3. Spot Coolers for the Diagnostic & MOT Stations

While most mechanics move around the shop, some tasks require standing entirely still—like running emissions tests, operating the MOT computer, or doing detailed electrical diagnostics.

For these static tasks, deploy an industrial spot cooler (portable AC). Pointing the directional exhaust nozzles at the diagnostic workstation provides instant, refrigerated relief for the operator, keeping their concentration high when dealing with complex electrical or safety-critical MOT work.
