How to Cool a Warehouse or Factory During a Summer Heatwave
You cannot air-condition a 20,000 sq ft warehouse with open loading bays. Learn how to deploy targeted spot cooling to keep your factory workers safe and productive.

When a summer heatwave strikes the UK, a warehouse or factory floor is one of the most dangerous places to work.
With uninsulated corrugated metal roofs absorbing the sun’s radiation, and heavy machinery, conveyor belts, and forklifts pumping out exhaust heat from the inside, a factory floor can easily exceed 35°C.
At these temperatures, it isn't just about comfort—it is a critical health and safety liability. Heat stress leads to severe fatigue, a massive spike in workplace accidents, and plummeting fulfillment rates. But because your loading bay doors are constantly open, trying to cool the entire building is physically impossible and financially ruinous.
Here is how to cool your workforce without trying to air-condition the entire postcode.
The "Envelope" Problem
Standard air conditioning requires a sealed thermal envelope. It pulls heat out of a closed room and pumps cold air in.
If you put a traditional AC unit in a massive warehouse with high ceilings and open shutter doors, the cold air simply sinks to the floor and rolls right out the loading bay. You are burning thousands of pounds in electricity to cool the pavement outside.
Instead of cooling the building, you must pivot your strategy to cooling the workers.
1. High-Velocity Drum Fans for Ambient Circulation
In massive open spaces, stagnant air is your biggest enemy. You need to create a high-capacity cross-breeze to force the hot, heavy air out of the building.
Standard pedestal fans will do absolutely nothing on a factory floor. You need industrial, high-velocity drum fans. Position these massive floor-level fans near open doors or at the ends of racking aisles to create a powerful wind-tunnel effect. This aggressively evaporates sweat from your workers' skin, utilizing the wind-chill effect to lower their perceived body temperature even if the ambient room temperature remains high.
2. Targeted Spot Cooling for Static Workers
If you have staff who are standing in one place all day—such as packing-line operatives, quality control inspectors, or machine operators—you must deploy targeted spot cooling.
Industrial portable air conditioners (often called "spot coolers") are designed exactly for this. Instead of trying to cool the entire 20,000 sq ft room, a spot cooler features flexible, directional exhaust tubes that blast refrigerated, 15°C air directly onto a specific workstation or employee. It provides instant thermal relief exactly where the labour is happening.
3. Evaporative Cooling (Swamp Coolers)
If you have massive loading bays that stay open all day, industrial evaporative coolers are incredibly effective. These large units pull hot ambient air through water-soaked cooling pads, naturally dropping the air temperature by up to 10°C before blowing it across the warehouse floor. Because they rely on evaporation rather than a sealed compressor, they actually require open doors and cross-ventilation to work efficiently.
Do not wait for an HSE incident or a collapsed worker. Equip your factory floor for the heat before the temperature spikes.
