How to Keep Your Hair Salon or Barbershop Cool During a Heatwave

Multiple blow dryers running at once will turn your salon into a sauna. Learn how to extract humidity and keep your clients comfortable when the temperature spikes.

When clients book an appointment at a hair salon or barbershop, they are paying for a premium, relaxing experience. They want to be pampered. What they absolutely do not want is to sit in a leather barber chair for an hour, sweating profusely under a plastic cutting cape.

During a summer heatwave, keeping a hair and beauty business cool is one of the hardest challenges on the high street. The very tools you need to do your job are actively working against your climate control.

Here is why your salon turns into a sweatbox, and exactly how to fix it before your clients cancel their bookings.

The "10 Space Heaters" Problem

A standard professional blow dryer uses between 1,800 and 2,000 watts of power. That is the exact same electrical draw and heat output as a winter space heater.

If you have five stylists working on a busy Saturday afternoon, you essentially have five space heaters blasting hot air directly into your shop. Add the heat from hair straighteners, towel warmers, and the body heat of a packed waiting area, and the ambient temperature of your salon will easily spike past 30°C.

The Humidity Multiplier

Salons also face a problem that standard retail shops do not: extreme humidity.

Washing hair, spraying water bottles, and blow-drying wet hair pumps massive amounts of moisture into the air. When you combine high heat with high humidity, sweat cannot evaporate. Your mirrors fog up, your staff feel exhausted, and your clients feel sticky and uncomfortable.

1. Dehumidification is Mandatory

You cannot just rely on open doors or standard fans. A fan in a humid room just blows wet, hot air around (and blows freshly swept hair all over the shop floor).

You must physically extract the moisture and the heat. A high-BTU portable air conditioner (12,000+ BTU) does both. As it pulls the hot air over its condenser coils, it aggressively strips the humidity out of the room. You must vent the exhaust pipe outside to completely remove the blow-dryer heat from the building.

2. Strategic Airflow for the Waiting Area

Keep the powerful mechanical cooling (the AC) focused on the cutting floor where the heat is generated. For your waiting area, deploy a quiet, oscillating tower fan.

Unlike cheap desk or floor fans that create chaotic wind (which is disastrous in a hair salon), a premium tower fan creates a smooth, controlled column of air. This keeps waiting clients cool and comfortable without blowing hair clippings across the room or disrupting the stylists at work.
