When the summer heat hits, you are forced to make a brutal choice: lie awake sweating all night, or run a cooling appliance and brace yourself for a massive electricity bill at the end of the month.
If you are trying to decide between buying a tower fan or a portable air conditioner, the upfront price tag is only half the story. You need to know what they actually cost to run for eight hours every single night.
Here is the exact breakdown of what you are paying for.
The Tower Fan: Cheap, Sustained Airflow
Tower fans are incredibly energy-efficient. They do not have heavy compressors or refrigerant gas; they simply use a small motor to spin blades and push existing air around the room.
A standard, high-quality tower fan uses about 50 watts of power. If you leave a 50W tower fan running for 8 hours overnight at an average UK electricity rate of 25p per kWh, it will use 0.4 kWh of electricity.
The Cost: Roughly 10p per night. You can run a tower fan every single night for a month for less than £4.00.
The Portable Air Conditioner: Mechanical Cooling
Unlike fans, portable air conditioners physically change the climate of the room. They use a heavy-duty compressor to pull hot air out, run it over freezing condenser coils, and exhaust the heat out the window. This requires significantly more power.
A standard 9000 BTU portable AC unit uses around 1000 watts (1 kW) while the compressor is actively running. However, modern AC units are thermostatically controlled. Once the room hits your target temperature (e.g., 18°C), the compressor shuts off and only the fan runs. Assuming the compressor runs for about half of an 8-hour night, you are using roughly 4 to 5 kWh.
The Cost: Roughly £1.00 to £1.25 per night.
The Verdict
The math is simple: A tower fan is drastically cheaper to run. It will cost you pennies a night.
However, you get exactly what you pay for. A tower fan will only circulate the air that is already in your room. If your top-floor bedroom is baking at 30°C, the fan will just blow 30°C air at your face for 10p a night.
If you are trapped in a room that retains thick, stagnant heat, spending the £1.00 a night to run a true portable AC is the only way to physically drop the temperature and actually get some sleep.
